Authorities in Equatorial Guinea have dismissed Baltasar Ebang Engonga from his role as Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF).

This action follows the circulation of a viral video showing Engonga with multiple women in compromising situations on social media.

The government had previously suspended Mr. Engonga after a leaked video suggested he had relations with over 400 women, some of whom are reportedly partners of high-profile individuals in Equatorial Guinea.

Engonga has not commented on the allegations, and the BBC has attempted to contact him for a response.

Reports indicate that President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo ordered Engonga’s dismissal. Engonga is the son of Baltasar Engonga Edjo, who is currently the President of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC).

Local media report that Engonga’s dismissal came via a decree signed by his great-uncle, President Mbasogo.

In related news, Vice President Teodoro Mangue pledged to take “severe measures” against officials engaging in sexual activities within government offices after the circulation of the alleged “sex tapes” involving a high-ranking civil servant and the spouses of prominent individuals.

“We will proceed with the immediate suspension of all officials found engaging in sexual relations within the offices of the country’s ministries,” the Vice President stated on his X (formerly Twitter) page on Monday.

Mr. Mangue also stated that the government would enforce strict measures against such actions, as they violate the code of conduct and public ethics laws.

The viral “sex tapes,” which surfaced on social media following the reported arrest of Engonga on unrelated corruption charges, prompted Mangue to order regulators and internet service providers to block the videos’ distribution.

The country’s Attorney General noted that the encounters appeared consensual but added that Engonga could face prosecution for “public health crimes” if he is found to have a sexually transmitted infection.

First Lady Constancia Mangue Obiang expressed strong disapproval of the incident, calling it “embarrassing.”

She voiced her disappointment during a meeting with Prime Minister Manuel Osa Nsue, who oversees administrative coordination.

“This incident is a social scandal that has already crossed our borders, affecting the image and reputation of Guinean women,” stated First Lady Obiang in a post on Facebook.
